Emotional grounding techniques are sensory experiences which anchor us in the present and help us manage emotions and maintain wellbeing. Creating sensations that say "there is no emergency" helps calm the body’s alert system so that the prefrontal cortex of the brain can regain its ability to think.
This course explores a range of sensory activities which can be used both for:
- individuals looking for personal coping tools or to enhance personal wellness; and
- professionals looking for options to use with clients.
Professionals often use these techniques to assist clients to remain connected to the present, and help them avoid distress, memories, flashbacks or intrusive thoughts that they can’t yet cope with. The activities introduced are easy, safe, low-cost and most are suitable for children or adults.
The tools can be especially helpful for people who experience anxiety, depression, PTSD, dissociation, along with those with experiences such as trauma, recent bereavement or chronic illness.
