Mental Health First Aid is the help provided in a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional treatment is received, or the crisis resolves.
Led by a skilled Aboriginal trainer, this two-day Youth Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander MHFA course is for adults who support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.
You will learn how to recognise and assist an adolescent who may be experiencing mental health issues, and what to do in a mental health crisis until professional help arrives.
Participants who successfully pass the post-course test will be accredited as a Mental Health First Aider for three years, before a half day refresher is required.
TOPICS INCLUDE
- Understanding Aboriginal youth mental health, including diagnoses, prevalence and common misconceptions.
- Understanding the prevalence and impact of mental illnesses, risk factors, and treatments and supports available.
- Symptoms and causes of depression, anxiety and psychosis.
- Assess for a range of crisis situations and provide initial support.
- How to provide initial support to young people who are experiencing a mental health crisis.
- Gain an understanding of the local and cultural supports and resources available to a young person experiencing mental health problems.

- Certificate of attendance.
- Optional post-course assessment and formal accreditation as a Mental Health First Aider, valid for three years.
