Lateral violence describes the way people in positions of powerlessness direct their dissatisfaction inward towards each other, themselves, and those less powerful than them. It is believed to occur in minorities worldwide, particularly the world’s indigenous peoples.
Sometimes called horizontal violence or intra-racial conflict, lateral violence is what happens when marginalised or oppressed people turn on each other. Delivered by an experienced Aboriginal speaker, this insightful keynote explores how and why lateral violence manifests in Australian Aboriginal communities, and the impacts it has on those involved.
Drawing on both traditional Aboriginal wisdom and contemporary human rights frameworks, the presentation looks at the most promising pathways towards healing.
