Motivational interviewing is an evidence-based approach to behaviour change. It is collaborative and goal oriented, while being led by the client’s own reasons for change.
While useful in a wide range of situations, Motivational Interviewing has been noted as especially effective with young people and clients who may have low confidence in their ability to change.
Applicable across diverse health, community and education settings, it is a form of structured counselling which empowers clients and engages them with respect and compassion.
Based on a set of conversation tools, MI offers a pragmatic approach to change and can be delivered in a clinical or community context. This two-day skill-building course is suitable for clinicians, along with human services professionals such as youth workers, mental health or AOD workers wanting to incorporate MI into regular practice.
